D'var: Parashat Eiqev 5784 Commentary by Robby Hurt Friday, August 23, 2024 |
Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25 |
Eikev means "because."
We do them because we are believers, the children of believers. It is about accepting that which is beyond our mind’s understanding.
Deuteronomy 8:3 (JPS Tanakh 1917)
And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. A very impactful and motivational verse. I was and came from generations of meat and potatoes people. G-d was right I didn’t eat any bread and was doing fine. But I changed my diet and started eating fresh ground whole wheat flour bread. And I didn’t previously know what words "proceeded from the mouth of G-d" but decided I better find out and am.
Deuteronomy 8:8
18 times in Tanakh and it’s not just talking about plenty and lack,
feast and famine. I have them in my notes and pray over them regularly.
"Torah Treats" Fruit of Israel Deuteronomy 8:10 "Eat and be satisfied" / "Eat and not be satisfied"
Deuteronomy 8:15
"Water out of flint rock" Not just any rock. Native American made their weapons ie spearheads and arrowheads out of flint. Flint is one of the rocks least likely to contain water.
Deuteronomy 11:18-20
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. 19And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 20And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates; G-d’s words are the best and purest words that can produce life, encouragement, instruction, and inspiration.
Haftarah
Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3 Isaiah 49:22 (JPS Tanakh 1917) Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations-goy, And set up Mine ensign to the peoples, And they shall bring thy sons in their bosom, And thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. Judeo-Christian Evangelical Zionist Gentiles see that verse as a command to help you all back in the land and that motivated my parents giving to help Jews make Aliyah and how I see myself in a humble way.
Isaiah 49:23b
And thou shalt know that I am the LORD, For they shall not be ashamed that wait for Me. There’s a book, Waiting On God that has 31 Devotions that has been very meaningful. As best I remember they are all from Tanakh. You all had 430 years of slavery, 40 years in the wilderness, 70 years in Babylon, and 1,878 years in the diaspora so you know how to wait. I am 71 and in many ways wondering what I am going to be when I grow up.
Isaiah 50:11 (JPS Tanakh 1917)
Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, That gird yourselves with firebrands, Begone in the flame of your fire, And among the brands that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of My hand; Ye shall lie down in sorrow. Don’t build your own spiritual fire! Robby Hurt |
